Want to write for us?

The European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) is a leading publisher of human rights news focusing on Romani peoples across Europe and beyond. As well as publishing expert analyses and primary source reporting on human rights violations faced by Romani communities, the ERRC welcomes contributions from outside writers who are committed to highlighting Roma Rights issues.

We especially encourage Romani  journalists1, writers, and activists to submit pitches. The ERRC is committed to supporting Romani voices and working collaboratively to bring under-reported stories to light.

What We Publish

The ERRC accepts pitches for articles that focus on human rights issues affecting Romani communities, as well as other related groups such as Travellers, Domari people, Balkan Egyptians and Ashkali. We prioritize stories with a rights-based focus, including topics such as discrimination, housing, education, justice, environmental rights, police abuse, and systemic exclusion.

We do accept articles about cultural issues, but they must approach the topic from a human rights perspective or include a clear rights-based element.

The views and opinions expressed in articles published on our News section do not necessarily reflect those of the ERRC as an institution, unless otherwise stated, and remain the intellectual property of the writers themselves.

Types of Articles We Accept

When submitting your pitch, please specify the type of article you would like to write:

  • Opinion Piece
  • Feature
  • Interview
  • Review
  • Investigative Piece

Articles are typically around 1,000 words. We also accept pitches for long-read articles or multi-part series, which should be pitched in more detail and may be longer in length.

Submission Guidelines

  • All articles must be written in English. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer translation services.
  • You may submit complete articles for consideration, but we strongly recommend pitching your idea first. We are much more likely to publish articles that have been previously pitched and agreed with an editor.
  • Your pitch should be concise and clearly outline the story, its relevance to Roma Rights, and the proposed structure or key points, as well as any relevant information on how you will go about telling your story (e.g. interviews you will conduct).
  • We will not accept pitches or articles written by Chat GPT or other “AI” generative large language learning models.
  • Please indicate the type of article (opinion, feature, interview, etc.) in your pitch.
  • All pitches should be sent to news@errc.org with the subject line: PITCH: [Short Title of Your Article]

Supporting Romani Voices

The ERRC is committed to amplifying the voices of Romani people. We are happy to work with Romani activists, community workers, and academics even if you have limited experience with publishing, to help develop your story and ensure these critical perspectives are heard.

If you have any questions about the process, feel free to reach out to us at news@errc.org.

If you are interested in volunteer writing, editing articles, and receiving or providing mentoring to volunteers interested in writing about Roma Rights issues, then consider joining the ‘ERRC Newsroom’ project with our Roma Rights Defenders volunteer section. This project brings together Romani and non-Romani activists with an interest in journalism and human rights and provides volunteers with mentoring, copy-editing, training, and opportunities to pitch articles about Roma Rights issues for publication. Drop an email to our Volunteers Coordinator, Milena Ćuk (milena.cuk@errc.org), with ‘ERRC Newsroom’ in the subject line.

1 The ERRC is interested in pitches from writers that belong to, or wish to write about, the following ethnic identities, collectively referred to as ‘Roma’ by the Council of Europe (despite encompassing multiple ethnic groups): Abdal, Ashkali, Balkan Egyptian, Bayash, Calé, Dom, Finnish Kaale, Gens du voyage, Gitanos, Lom, Manouche, Roma, Romanichal, Romany Gypsy, Rudari, Sinti, Traveller, Welsh Kale, Yenish.
